DEAR MUM, HAVING A GREAT TIME IN PENANG. COCKTAILS DELICIOUS, WEATHER SCORCHING HOT, I'VE GOT A SUPER TAN AND LOTS OF SOUVENIRS. INCLUDING A LOVELY NEW PAIR OF 34D BOOBS

Teenage Jennifer Forrest flew out to the paradise isle of Penang to enjoy its sun, sea and palm-fringed beaches.

But she came back with more than just memories and a tan that would fade.

Jennifer left Britain with the 34B breasts she had always felt were too small... and came back 19 days later with a curvier 34D figure.

The 19-year-old promotions girl from Wimbledon had been quoted up to £6,000 to have a breast enlargement op in Britain.
Like a growing number of Britons looking for cosmetic surgery, she made the controversial decision to have it done much more cheaply abroad, ignoring the potential risks. The same operation was available for just £3,500 at a clinic on the island of Penang off the North-West coast of Malaysia ... with a luxurious stay in a top-class hotel thrown in.

Here's Jennifer's day-by-day account of the experience:

DAY 1: Friday - I'm at Heathrow Airport and so excited. When I came off the Pill my boobs shrank. to 34B. I work in promotions and do some modeling, so it's held me back. At one underwear shoot they just told me not to bother. I'm sure bigger boobs will attract more men too, but I'm single and not too worried about a boyfriend. I'd been saving like mad for an op then came across a website called Beautiful Holidays while searching the internet.
DAY 2: Saturday - The flight takes 14 hours with a stop-over in Singapore. I am met by someone from the holiday company and my own "butler" from my hotel, the Eastern And Oriental. My room has a sea view, air conditioning, huge double bed, two TVs, a DVD player, fridge, and portable phone.

DAY 3: Sunday - I sleep until 2pm then go for a 90-minute meeting with the surgeon at a medical centre five minutes away. I had a phone consultation with him before leaving home and he's got all the right certificates and diplomas. He shows me pictures to explain the types of implant. I opt for silicone because they look natural. He warns me there is a small risk of blood clots or infection. It is also possible my body could reject the implants, which would make them go hard.

DAY 4: Monday - I am driven to the hospital for 8am. I have a clean and luxurious private room. It's 29oC outside, but cool and soothing in here. I have blood tests and meet the anaesthetist. Going under scares me the most. I will be unconscious for over an hour. There is no one here such as my mum if anything goes wrong. Once I'm unconscious my life will be in their hands. I wake hooked up to a machine. Whenever I feel pain I can push a button for a shot of morphine. It's controlled so I can't have too much. After half an hour I am taken back to my room. The implants have been put in through cuts in my armpits. There are tubes to drain off blood and fluid. I drift in and out of sleep and take morphine every couple of hours.

DAY 5: Tuesday - I can only move my arms from the elbow down so eating is difficult. The surgeon and the anaesthetist check on me and the nurses take off my bandages. My boobs are swollen and huge. I have to wear a sports bra all the time to stop them moving. I am driven back to the hotel where I sleep and watch DVDs. I take painkillers three times a day with meals and antibiotics to prevent infection.

DAY 6: Wednesday - Moving my arms from the shoulders is really difficult. The surgeon has told me I must move as much as I can or the scars could heal so tightly I won't even be able to comb my hair. I get in the shower and look at my new boobs. They are still a bit big, but they've gone down a lot. There are strips over the cuts but no stitches to be removed as they are inside and will dissolve. I feel sore and don't want to see or speak to anyone. If I want anything I just call room service.

DAY 7: Thursday - I venture out. Other guests probably think it's odd I am here on my own. I try to hide the bruising and swelling as much as I can.

DAY 8: Friday - I go out with a sarong around my chest because the scar tissue will not heal properly if exposed to sun. Bruising is starting to come up under my breasts. It looks horrible.

DAY 9: Saturday - The cuts under my arms are really sore. I get in the pool for the first time. I can't swim properly, but float and paddle for a bit.

DAY 10: Sunday - The hotel arrange a trip to the mountains. It's great to have a change of scenery. Now there's just a bit of bruising under my boobs, but I'm still in pain. I call the surgeon and he assures me the pain is because the anaesthetic has worn off.

DAY 11: Monday - I am starting to feel like a normal tourist and spend the day by the pool. The swelling and pain are going. Still a bit black and blue though.

DAY 12: Tuesday - Check-up with my surgeon again. There is no infection. He gives me oil for the bruises and cream to help the scars heal. I can stop wearing the sports bra. I'm still uncomfortable, but surprised how quickly everything is healing.

DAY 13: Wednesday - A whole day spent lazing by the pool.

DAY 14: Thursday -A two-hour ferry trip to another island, Payar. I go snorkeling. People stare at me - then I remember I've got big boobs! I am gorgeous!

DAY 15: Friday - My last check- up with my surgeon. He says I won't need to see him again unless there is a problem or I have any questions. He recommends doctors in the UK I can see if there are any problems. Anything horrendous and they will fly me back here for free.

DAY 16: Saturday - Still a spot of bruising under my left breast, but you can't see it with a top on. I go horse riding on the beach. With the white sand and palm trees it feels like I am in paradise.

DAY 17: Sunday - A day by the pool. I am a bit conscious about men staring at me, but I think it's probably just guys looking at a young blonde in her bikini! I sit sipping a cosmopolitan cocktail of vodka, lime and cranberry juice as the sun goes down.

DAY 18: Monday - Topping up my tan and last-minute shopping.

DAY 19: Tuesday - I fly home. There is no discomfort from my boobs on the flight. Dr Lee has told me the idea that fake boobs explode on planes is myth! My breasts are a lot bigger, in between a C and D...but they are still natural and soft. I am really, really happy with them. I now have great boobs - and a great tan too!!

GOING abroad for cosmetic surgery is growing in popularity. Other top destinations include Brazil, Poland, South Africa and Croatia.

But beware. You could be taking a huge gamble and even put your life at risk if you base your decision on price alone. Here are five checks you need to make before committing yourself:

Five checks to stay safe

1 ASK for the surgeon's references and check they are genuine by contacting the organisations mentioned.

2 GET the company organising the trip to put you in touch with previous patients treated by the same surgeon.

3 INSIST on a face-to-face consultation with the surgeon when you arrive. Visit the hospital or clinic and check it is up to standard. If you have any doubts, don't go ahead.

4 BE aware of your medical history and tell the surgeon and make sure you know the risks and what could go wrong.

5 Make sure there are proper provisions for aftercare when you come back to the UK.
